Lidded Box
notes
- end-grain boxes don't move much so tight-fit lid is possible
- cross-grain (bowl-grain) boxes move and potentially oval so loose-fit is best
sequence
- prep
- turn both lid and top as round as you like
- put small recess in top of box and bottom of lid
- box
- expand-chuck box and rough-shape outside
- add ridge at bottom for outside chuck grip
- compress-chuck box on base and hollow inside, sand, and finish
- expand-chuck base inside
- push up to base of jaws to ensure square to rim
- finish shaping, sanding, and finishing of outside and bottom
- obviously remove chuck-marks on base if any and add any base details
- lid
- expand-chuck lid and add tenon/groove for compress-chuck at top
- compress-chuck lid and size base of lid to diameter of box
- if in-fitting then size to inside diameter of box
- this will be the outside of a ridge
- if out-fitting size to outside diameter of box
- this will be the inside of a ridge
- for salt-cellars there's no ridge since lid has hinge and slides over top of box
- finish shaping bottom of lid
- add groove to inside ridge area for expand-chuck lid later
- taper ridge to allow for more options to size to box
- sand and finish bottom of lid
- be sure to test-fit to box
- expand-chuck bottom of lid
- shape top of lid as desired
- include center knob for tight-fitting lids
- lids that extend beyond edge of box don't need knobs
- sand and finish box lid
